Antigone 27/09

Rehearsal for Antigone

We rehearsed our piece for half hour before we all performed our pieces to the class.

We were given the following feedback
- Good physicality throughout our full performance
- Work on keeping our eye lines up and looking at the audience
- Creon should walk up to the audience at the point when he doesn't have any lines and mock Antigone and Ismene when they are speaking to each other

My own feedback
- I need to work more on my physicality with my inner monologue when I am not speaking. I want to include interaction to the audience within it.
- Also we need to look at our spacings and try and use some of the dead space in front of us by bringing certain parts closer to the audience

What to do next lesson?
We want to separate Antigone and Ismene after their chunk of dialogue. This will show how they are feeling pulled apart by their own actions but still angry at each other. We could do this by having Creon go into the middle of them because he is the one that has triggered it.
Also we didn't get round to adding it in today but we want to have Creon to walk up to Antigone when he says the line "Antigone must die" He should get very close and loom over the top.
Finally when Creon says "other fields for him to plough" it has a nasty sexist/sexual meaning and so we should play around with the way it is said.

Rehearsal for Antigone

"Acting is behaving truthfully in imagined circumstances"
~Meisner~

Today we held our rehearsal inside the Theatre to help us practice our pieces within the space we will be performing in. This helps us get a feel of our spacings within our performances, making sure we are not using to much or to little. Also it gives us an idea of how much we need to project our voices so we can be heard by everyone from the front to the back rows.

During our rehearsal we added in a stage slap during the first conversation between Ismene and Creon. As Creon says the line "swear to me" he slaps Ismene across the face. We decided to do this to build upon his character. It tells the audience the subtext and hidden meaning that he is not a nice man as well as letting them know he feels threatened and needs to show his authority to feel in control.

We performed our piece to the class and got the following feedback
- we exclaimed a few words
- don't walk around the performance space unless there is a reason
- good projection and dictation
- we were convincing and realistic, for example our slap didn't feel forced
- audience was pulled in

The one thing I do think we need to work on next lesson is our ending. I feel awkward when I have to be on stage without any lines at the end, and Taylor has the same problem half way through our piece. I feel like we need to think about our characters inner monologues, and have them react to the audience about what is being said onstage.
